Vinyl flooring has been in the flooring market for many decades. With the advancement of flooring technology, the quality of vinyl flooring has increased ever since. Today, there is even vinyl flooring products with eco-accreditations such as the Singapore Green Label.

Homeowners sometimes got confused by the range of vinyl flooring products, hence let’s delve into the topic on the types of vinyl flooring available for home owners in Singapore today.

Clickable Resilient Flooring

Resilient flooring is part of the family of vinyl flooring. However, it is very different to traditional vinyl flooring due to features like 5mm thickness, 0.5 mm wear layer, made from pure virgin vinyl pulp and you do not need a flat subfloor to install the resilient flooring. Many flooring contractors sometimes will confuse the consumer by telling consumers that their resilient flooring is high end, premium and luxury. Basically, these flooring are considered as clickable resilient flooring which is categorised under the big family of vinyl flooring.

Vinyl Sheet, Plank or Tiles (or Traditional Vinyl Flooring)

These types of vinyl flooring are usually installed in clean room, clinics, hospitals and science labs. This is because medical vinyl sheets and tiles have anti-static and anti-bacterial properties which make it suitable for the above-mentioned areas. One thing to know that vinyl sheet and tiles usually has low thickness and wear layer compared to clickable resilient flooring, that is why, it is not recommended for homes.

Medical Clickable Resilient Flooring

From the terms, you will be able to guess this type of flooring has both features of a clickable resilient flooring and also medical vinyl sheet or tiles. Usually, they are in plank types and is highly recommended for homes with kids and elderly due to its eco friendly, anti-bacterial and durable features.

Eco Resilient Flooring (ERF)

This type of vinyl flooring has similar features to clickable resilient flooring, only that its focus is more on being certified eco friendly and eco healthy. Typical features of eco resilient flooring that makes it different to traditional clickable resilient flooring are its safe composite of material used to manufacture the flooring, better contribution to indoor air quality and also certified eco friendly. Other than that, it has all the features of clickable resilient flooring (whether it is name premium resilient, high end resilient, luxury resilient and so on), such as high slip resistant, waterproof, high impact resistant, high stain resistant, better dimensional stability, termite proof and more.

Now, you have a better understanding of vinyl flooring and the current types of vinyl flooring options available today for our home owners. Hence, do make wise decision when shopping for flooring. Do not be misled by marketing terms of clickable resilient flooring such as high end resilient, luxury resilient, premium resilient and more!

In the past, ceramic floor tiles are the trend. If we were to visit any old house, we will not be too surprise that it is ceramic. Even up till to today, there are still people using the ceramic floor tiles. However, there is an increasing trend of eco resilient flooring today. Many consumers are confused over the choice of the tradition and the trend. This article will describe the difference between the two choices.

Durability

Ceramic flooring is quite durable, if you know how to take good care of it. It can last for about 50 years or more. However, a drop of heavy object on the tiles, may break the tiles..

On the other hand, eco resilient flooring has high in durability due to its extreme dimensional stability, thick protective wear layer and reasonable thickness. With these features, it is no wonder eco resilient flooring manufacturers are able to provide lifetime warranty for the product.

Installation

Installation of ceramic tiles will take a lot of time, At the end of the day, there will be a lot of mess after the installation too. It may also take longer time for the installation complete. This is partly because ceramic tiles requires the use of wet cement for installation.

Eco Resilient Flooring, on the other hand, can be completed faster compared to ceramic tiles. A typical four room BTO flat may take a few hours of installation. It is much fuss free and so much easier. Not to forget, it is pretty mess free too!

Replacement

You can easily walk into a tile shop to get a replacement of the broken tile and replace it yourself. However, if your tiles are installed long time back, you might have problems finding a replacement. You can consider it a new fashion or trend if you have a sudden patch of different tiles out of nowhere on your floor.

Eco Resilient Flooring, as mentioned previously, is covered under warranty for lifetime on residential properties. If there is any faulty parts on the flooring, you can always call up the flooring contractors again and they will be there to solve your problem with a replacement plank. Hence, no need to worry about having a out of place patch on the floor!

Maintenance

Both type of flooring are relatively easy to maintain. However, for the ceramic tiles, there is the grout area that you need to scrub. Grout is the part where the tiles are joined. It is normally the dirtiest part of the floor on ceramic tiles flooring. A lot of manual work is required, but not very often. Otherwise, to maintain both flooring, you will only need to sweep and mop the floor to maintain the cleanliness. For Eco Resilient Flooring (ERF), cleaning is so easy and completely fuss free.

Now that we have gone through the differences between the 2 types of flooring, we hope you have a clearer and better understanding of the two.

Flooring and lighting will always complement one another. Here are some tips for you to consider when installing flooring and lighting for your home.

Flooring

Dark Wood Coloured Flooring – it enhances a cosy design feel to your home living space. When mixed with light furnishing or walls, it will create a simple classic and modern design to your home.

Light Wood Designed Flooring – it gives your interior space a classic wood look. Light wood design blends very well with dark (or contrasting) coloured furnishing to make your home look neat and modern.

White Flooring – White coloured flooring contributes to a minimalist and spacious living interior. The more space you allocate to your flooring, the more spacious and ‘bigger’ it will look.

Black Flooring – Not very popular colour because black flooring is pretty restrictive when it comes to the overall interior design of the home. Unless you are a risk taker, we do not recommend you to choose black coloured flooring.

Grey Flooring – The best type of flooring colour in terms of matching designs with the furnishing and walls in definitely grey colour. It works best for both dark and light coloured furnishing, giving the home a unique and trendy feel.

Lighting

As much as we want to decorate the home to the right design feel we wanted with our flooring, we do have to know that lighting plays a big part on changing the mood of the home as well as the design of the flooring.

Natural Lighting – Allow natural lighting into your home. Natural light, when it reflects on your flooring, will exude a natural spacious look to your entire home.

Yellow Lighting – These are also known as cosy lights. Its dim way of exposure on your flooring, adds a cosy and romantic feel to your entire living space. Best to install for your master bedroom.

LED Lights – One of the most cost saving lights today. LED lights can have a varied range of colour. Different colours exudes different design effects on your flooring. However, too many kinds of lighting colours may make your overall design look confusing and non-complement with your flooring. Therefore, it is important to stay with not more than 3 lighting colours.

White Lights – This is the most common and brightest lighting among the rest. White lights puts more emphasis on your flooring, walls and furnishing. Therefore, it fits well with any flooring colouring.

A Simple combination

From the article above, you will see that flooring and lighting are two inseparable components that blends and complements well with one another. Hence, choose your flooring and lighting wisely!

Why is Floor Skirting Necessary For Your Home?

As compared to the conventional glue-down method, modern vinyl flooring is designed to ‘float’ freely as a whole. As such, tiny gaps are often found at the perimeters of the flooring space to give it room to do so.

The natural movements of vinyl planks are so tiny that you hardly feel them beneath your feet! Nevertheless, it is crucial not to restrict their natural movements so they don’t end up buckling over time.

That being said, flooring gaps are often unsightly if left uncovered. This is where floor skirting or wall skirting comes into play. With both functional and aesthetic purposes to complement your flooring, here are four benefits of floor skirting for your home’s vinyl flooring.

(Wondering if floor skirting is necessary in Singapore? Get a free consultation)

# 1 Protects The Wall

Have you ever seen markings on the walls that were left behind by very old furniture? Observe the marked areas and you may notice that in those particular areas, there was no floor skirting installed at all. Floor skirting provides a functional gap between the furniture, flooring and the wall. This is important for the long-term protection of your house walls.

#2 Covers Gaps Between Flooring & Wall

Sometimes, it may seem like your home’s flooring has not been installed well, as there are visible gaps between the flooring and the wall. Before you call up your contractor to fault them, know that the gaps were intentionally created to accommodate the expansion or contraction of the flooring.

Floor skirting helps to cover up these tiny gaps for a seamless flooring surface and prevents water from seeping in as well. Made from fully waterproof vinyl material, floor skirting ensures that the foundation of your floors and walls are not affected by the negative impacts of humidity in Singapore. Its vinyl material makes it resistant to termites as well.

#3 Beautifies A Home

Floor skirting can make a lot of difference to a blank piece of wall and brighten up a barren house. Done tastefully, it can even be considered as a design highlight of a house’s interior. With PVC, laminated uPVC and vinyl floor skirting products that come in a wide range of colours and designs, one can certainly mix and match the design of their floor skirting with their home’s trendy flooring design. With different types of materials available as well, the sky’s the limit.

#4 Barrier Between Wet Mops & Wall

Constant contact with a wet mop may ultimately damage your walls with ugly wet patches! When moping the floor, a floor skirting acts as a useful barrier between your wet mop and the wall, preventing those ugly wet patches. The Floor Gallery’s highly moisture-proof and durable Eco Resilient Vinyl Floor Skirting gives walls an extra layer of protection.

Never underestimate the importance of what floor skirting can do for your home. With the right design and colour, this simple furnishing can add beauty to your house and protect those precious walls as well.

It is that time of the year again in Singapore, where we see joss paper burnt by the roadside and colourful ‘getais’ (performance stage), where performers sing and dance for both the living and ‘non-living’. We call it the 7th Month of Lunar Year or the Hungry Ghost Month when the ‘good brothers and sisters’ from the other world visit the living world. This tradition has taught the young and old to remember and pay our respects to their deceased ancestors, relatives and friends.

Renovating House? Sure or not?

In the lingo of the renovation industry (this applies to the flooring industry as well), it is our ‘lao’ (off-peak) season. This is because it is a common taboo to carry out housing renovations during the lunar 7th month. This is because renovations during the lunar 7th month may cause obstructions that “hurt” the spirits and cause bad luck.

Rather than avoiding renovations completely, experienced renovation contractors will usually perform a simple ritual and offer incense to the spirits to prevent bad luck from happening. Sort of like asking them for permission to renovate the house, yeah?

But… What Does It Have Do With Flooring?

The good thing about installing flooring products like Eco Resilient Flooring (ERF) or click vinyl flooring, is that the flooring installation can be completed within a few hours during the day. Furthermore, it can be done without causing any noise disturbances because the flooring can simply be installed over the existing sub-floor without any hacking of tiles, drilling and wet works. Hence, it is fast and easy! Of course, flooring installers can do a simple ritual to please the spirits at the request of home owners.

(Thinking of doing home renovations during 7th month? Get a free consultation here)

Hint: Best Period For Flooring Installation

As mentioned above, the 7th lunar month is usually the off-peak period for the renovation and flooring industry. What this means for you, as the lucky customer, is that your contractor will have more time to take care of your renovation and flooring needs, ensuring greater service and quality!

Fun Facts: Common Taboos of the Hungry Ghost Month

#1 Don’t Stay Up Too Late at Night
Stay at home and spend more time with your family and the floor!

#2 Don’t go swimming
Build a beautiful balcony deck at home!

#3 If you feel sudden coldness, remain calm
Flooring like eco resilient flooring (ERF), vinyl flooring and wood flooring keeps your feet warm and comfy when the weather is chillingly cold.

#4 Don’t talk about ghosts or say you smelled something
Talk about other things, like your brand new stylish flooring or decking!

#5 Avoid hanging wet clothes out at night
With the 100% waterproof properties of eco resilient flooring (ERF), you don’t have to worry about getting your floor wet from hanging clothes indoors.

There is a common saying, “whether the taboo is true or not, it is always good to believe and follow the advice.” However, if there’s a solution to the taboo, why not try a different way of doing things?

Let’s take the opportunity of the Lunar 7th month as a way to pay our respects to our deceased ancestors, relatives and friends. As for our non-Chinese friends from other races and culture, thank you for your understanding and respect during this annual period!

The London’s Grenfell tower incident had caused building authorities and contractors over the world in looking at the importance of fire resistant material, as the fire is likely caused by the aluminium composite wall cladding on the facade of Grenfell tower based on the news report. The composite wall cladding products are low in fire resistance such that it quickened the spread of fire when it occured.

Buying Tips for Safety Flooring Products

Building materials, whether it is cladding, flooring, decking or even furnishings, most of them has some level of fire resistance and safety features. To make it simple for home owners to identify safe flooring or decking product in this case, we have put up 3 simple points for them to look at.

#1 Fire Resistance Certification

One of the most important certificates to see in any building product, is the fire resistance certification. In Singapore, the most common one is the CE marking or “Conformité Européene”. In order to obtain this certification, a product will need to go through tests, one of it is the fire spread test. This is to ensure, that the fire spread will be slow and small when the product catches fire. The slower and smaller the fire spread, the better the fire resistance.

#2 Materials and Indoor Air Quality

Another important factor when it comes to fire resistance is the indoor air quality and the material of the product. When the product catches fire, the fumes produced is it harmful or not harmful to the human health? The amount of smoke produced is it a lot or not? Hence, it is important to have a certified fire resistant product that had the relevant test reports on the indoor air quality.

#3 Is It Certified Eco-Friendly?

There are many green certifications for building products with diverse certification standards. Here, you have to look into whether the product is certified eco friendly based on the safety of the material composite and the indoor air quality of the product. One credible green certifications is the Singapore Green Label. Some home owners may not realise that other type of green certification may only look into whether the product is manufactured in a environmentally friendly process and not its health or safety impact in the home. So, it is important for home owners to ask more questions here.

In summary, certified fire resistant building products from flooring , decking, cladding and furnishing are very important to ensure safety in the home as well as any buildings from potential fire incidents. Be safe and prudent when making a decision to buy your next building products or flooring!

Platform flooring has been slowly becoming a trend in Singapore. What exactly is a platform flooring? Platform flooring is where a portion of your house flooring is raised. But why? Won’t it be more dangerous, you might ask. Let’s take a look at 4 common reasons why people prefer to have a platform flooring in your home.

Trend for Platform Bed

Platform bed has been an ongoing trend for quite some time. It follows the minimalistic Japanese theme, where everything is simple and highly sophisticated. It goes by the rule of having the least furniture the better. The flooring platform for the platform bed are actually used as an alternative to a bed frame. The advantage of having a no bed frame bed is that everything is in your control. You can customize the head board, create your own support for the mattress and maximise your room space.

Extra Storage Space

Some owners may find that their house is too small and wants to remove their storeroom, for example. When you remove the storeroom, you will face the issue of where to put your stuff. You do not want to have a house full of stuff when your guests come in. So what’s the best way?An underground storage room! You can try to create more storage space with the flooring platform, storing your stuff under the ground, yet not leaving a mess for your visitors to see. In fact, your visitors may even be impressed with your space saving idea of storing things under ground!

Segregate Areas of the house

You may want to segregate the different areas of the house by having a divider and platform flooring is your best bet. For example, you may want to segregate a play area for your kids, telling them that they can only play in this area. Instead of drawing boxes or lines on your flooring which will make the whole floor looks messy, you can choose to go for platform flooring.

“Wow” element

Entering into a house with a platform flooring will most probably impress your friends and family as it adds a different ambience to your whole house. The theme of your house changes with just a little tweak to the design of the flooring, from a flat flooring to a platform flooring.

In summary, if you are planning to do something different to make your home looks uniquely good, consider platform flooring!

The post Do You Prefer Dark Coloured Flooring? appeared first on The Floor Gallery.

Different colors and different shades of the flooring, together with the different color of the surrounding will give you, your family and your guest different feel. Does having a dark flooring gives the whole house a darker feel? Or does lighter flooring gives the whole house a lighter feel? Today, we will look through the advantages and disadvantages of darker flooring.

It is not common in Asian countries, especially the Chinese, to have dark flooring. To many, it is said that dark flooring will make the room smaller as darker flooring will absorb light. However, wall color and furniture will help in making the room looks different. Having a brighter colored wall and lighter furniture will make the effect of enlarging the room. Darker flooring will also make your house “pop” out due to contrast. This “pop” out effect will, surprisingly, add values to your house as it gives the trendy look, making your house resale value up.

Do you know that having a darker flooring will make the room more attractive? Because it is unique in the color shade, it tends to grab one’s attention almost immediately. Darker color, especially black, is often associated with power and social prestige. It will also give the room a tingle of stylish feel. With darker flooring, it is also easier to create the different feel you are looking for, for example, rustic or trendy.

Dark flooring, compared to lighter flooring, might not do as good job as covering up dust and scratches. Having a glossy colored flooring will make it even worst. You will not want to have your guests, kids or even pets to enter into your place until you are sure their soles are cleared of dust. Provided you do not mind cleaning the floor every now and then after they entered or walked on the floor. Flooring with patterns can help to cover the dirt and dust left behind by others.

Where would be a great place for dark flooring, you might ask. Kitchen is definitely a big NO, as there are mess and spillages every now and then very easily. You would not want to have these stains showing on the floor, imperfecting the beautiful kitchen you have every now and then after your cooking time. How about bedroom? You can consider master bedroom or any bedroom for this matter. We would not be expecting too much spillages or messes in the bedroom. Just take note that a darker flooring can make the room smaller.

The Eco Resilient Flooring (ERF) that we carries has many designs and colors. There is sure bound to have one that suits your room theme, be it dark or light flooring. Contact us for advice, if you cannot make up your mind!
