Laminate flooring has been in the flooring market for more than a decade, it is a cost efficient way of furnishing one’s home without spending much on the renovation compared to installation of real wood. Though with the introduction of clickable resilient flooring as a strong substitute to laminate flooring, laminate flooring has become less popular ever since. However, it is still one of the best flooring options today. Below are some benefits and drawbacks of installing laminate flooring for your home.

Ease of Maintaining

Because it is water resistant, it is relatively easy to clean the floor. There is no worries on leaving a water stain mark, if the stain has been cleaned promptly. Typically, a vacuum or sweeping should be able to maintain the floor condition, protecting it from dusts and dirts which can erode the flooring slowly over time. There is no need to wax, polish or varnish for the floor.

Versatility

Technology has becoming so advanced that you can have any texture feel or any look for your flooring. It is easy to have different prints on the flooring to suit your theme. This is how versatile laminate flooring are.

Installation

Installation of the laminate flooring is relatively easy. You can do it on your own and it is relatively easy with the technology today. Not forgetting it is relatively fast; one room takes perhaps a day or two to complete! However, it is recommended to have professionals to install it for you, just to ensure proper installation is done. It is easy for you to decide on wanting to change another flooring design, but do you know it is also relatively easy for laminate flooring to be overlaid on your current flooring? This can save you the hassle of needing to remove or hacking the old flooring before installing the new flooring.

3 ‘S’ resistant!

Good quality laminate flooring is slip resistant, stain resistant and also scratch resistant. Therefore, making it a durable flooring for both residential and commercial properties.

Drawbacks

Waterproof

One important drawback is that laminate flooring is not waterproof. Therefore, it has the potential risk of getting water (moisture) damage especially in tropical humid countries like Singapore. Leaving the windows open where rain may come or a prolonged air-conditioned room may not be wise if laminate flooring was installed.

With the above mentioned pointers, do weigh the merits and drawback before committing to having laminate flooring.

Every house needs flooring and flooring serves many people. It should have a non-slip surface even when the floor is wet. It should be durable enough to withstand scratches, sunlight, minor accidents, wear and tear, termites and more. In addition, your flooring should be good-looking.

When you search for your ideal home flooring for your brand new and or re-modeled home, consider your priorities (and the people living with you) – cost, children, grandparents, domestic helper, tenant, safety and eco-friendliness. You want the people living with you to be safe and feel comfortable at all times.

Laminate Wood Flooring

Beautiful and timeless, laminate wood flooring (or laminate flooring) is a wonderful option for homeowners looking to spruce up their homes. Not only does it look good, but also improves your property’s value, appeal and character. And you do not have to worry about pests like termites burrowing underneath the floor.

Laminate wood flooring mimics the texture, grain and color of real woods, and comes in a variety of colors and at a relatively affordable cost. It is also less expensive to install than natural hardwood flooring. Laminate wood comes in strips or planks. They can be laid in any pattern; if you wish to achieve an elegant look for your home, you should discuss with both your flooring company and interior designer on how best to lay your flooring.

Although the price for both flooring and installation can be as low as $3.50 per square foot, you will find fewer wood flooring style and color choices among the least expensive range.

Water-resistant and easy to clean

If you are thinking (and dreaming) of wood floors in the bathroom but having second thoughts about the cost and durability, fret not. Laminate flooring can withstand moisture from drippy wet towels – but you should always clean up large puddles to avoid letting water seep into the flooring. It is also resistant to stains like nail polish, makeup, paint and other solutions, thus making cleaning easy.

If you are a pet owner, laminate wood flooring is ideal as it is easy-to-clean and needs little maintenance to keep flooring in good condition.

Sunlight and fading

If you have plenty of sunlight in your home, laminate wood flooring will not fade. Chances are, you will have sunlight in your home, since you are living in a tropical country. With laminate wood flooring, you do not have to worry about any change in colors with your flooring. Laminate wood flooring has UV protection integrated into the surface, thus it can be directly exposed to sunlight.

Elderly-friendly

For households with seniors, laminate flooring is a good choice. The Floor Gallery also has a variety of laminate flooring with durable non-slip surfaces and care products for homeowners to choose from.

Question(s): Why is laminate flooring good for seniors?

When investing in a fresh floor, many home owners are faced with an option between laminate and conventional. The difference these 2 kinds of floors can be confusing at first, which is why we put together an easy guide that matches hardwood against laminate flooring, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages each floor kind in terms of durability, appearance, ease of repair and maintenance, longevity and eco-friendliness.

Aesthetics and Appearance

In terms of aesthetics, the difference between conventional and laminate floors is glaringly clear. Read wood is featured by wonderful texture variation of the wood grain, which is why no 2 planks of hardwood flooring, whether engineered or solid, appear actually alike. In laminate flooring, pre-shaped patterns that imitate the appearance of wood texture are imprinted onto the floor area. For this factor, identical designs are repeated on average every five boards.

Although in appearance some top standard laminate floors may look like true wood, repetition is unavoidable, as individuality of an authentic wood is not possible to replicate.

Moisture

Wood is a breathing, organic material that feedbacks to fluctuations in temperature and humidity. For this factor, engineered and solid conventional floors should be fixed in interiors where moisture levels are checked and kept at 45-50 percent for strong and 45-60 percent for engineered floors. Even though engineered conventional hardwood floors have higher stability and dimensional, most wood floors producers do not advise installing them in kitchens or bathrooms, where humidity and temperature can change significantly. In humid and hot climate, such as Singapore, Conventional laminate flooring that is engineered or multilayer is favorable over solid hardwood floors.

Laminate floors have top resistance to moisture and are often used for bathrooms, kitchens and basements. Nevertheless, it is vital to perfectly read the producer warranty and advises in order to reject costly mistakes.

Durability

Durability of any flooring surface mainly depends on amount of foot traffic, as well as adherence to producer advises in regards to maintenance and care of the floor.

Outer layer of most laminate floors is produced by bounding aluminum oxide and melamine resins at high pressure and top heat. The resulting floor surface is generally harder that of natural wood.

Durability of an authentic conventional floor varies depending on producer, finish and maintenance practices. Engineered or solid hardwood floors can be renewed, refinished and repaired quite easily, often without the need to change planks or even the full floor, as is the case with destroyed laminate flooring.

Ease of Repair

Quality laminate flooring does not repair simply. In floating laminate flooring – one that is fixed by snapping individual parts combine and laying them without glue – destroyed planks can be replaced and removed. If laminate flooring was fixed using glue-down technique, floor repairs become very hard. Laminate cannot be refinished or sanded.

Whether engineered or conventional, hardwood flooring is significantly simple to repair than laminate. If surface destroy is extensive, the full floor can be refinished and sanded. If problem is localized, then it can be repaired by deleting and changing individual planks, or even by manually, staining, sanding and refinishing the place in question, depending on style of finish.

Both hardwood and laminate flooring clearly have their advantages and disadvantages, and it is up to the home owners to decide what they really want for their home, before making a decision on their home floor.

To fix laminate floors, you will need to buy a backing already linked to the plank or finish with padding prior to installation. This support makes the flooring very durable and will protect your floors. Laminates have many benefits that would make you want to buy this kind of flooring over any cost. Long lasting, durability, beauty and cost are just a few of the factors that make many home owners prefer laminate flooring over the rest.

When you select this type of material for your house, you can feel excellent about how everything looks and feels. Laminate flooring is affordable, fast and simple to install, looks superb, and you will love the results right away.

Thus it plays an important part in your home, setting the ambience of the home, in the way you want it to be. There are many types of flooring, but mainly, they can be categorized into light coloured and dark coloured flooring. Both light and dark flooring have their own unique advantages and we are going to tell you more about it.

Light Coloured Flooring

Light coloured flooring is the more popular and more often used flooring in homes. This is because light coloured flooring makes the interior space of the home look and feel bigger and brighter. Light coloured flooring also goes well with almost any coloured walls. Of course, if u have white walls, light coloured flooring will definitely make the home look really spacious!

Home owners who loves to have a contrasting interior space, they will prefer to install dark coloured floors to go with white walls. Contrasting colours in the home design gives the home a modern and more stylish look.

Depending on the theme of your home interior design, whether you would prefer to have a flooring that complements or contrasts with the walls, light and dark flooring can then be decided. Furniture in the home also play an important role.

Kitchen is an important part of the house, and the flooring of the kitchen of course is just as important. There are many types of kitchen flooring that are available in the market. But most of the time, the choices we make are usually affected by factors such as durability of the flooring, ease of cleaning, cost, scratch resistance, etc. If you have kids, have you considered taking into your flooring plans? I bet no one would risk having his kid’s head hit the tiles or other hard surface floors. No one would want to constantly replace ceramic utensils or have the floor scratched by toys.

So to avoid these accidents mostly associated with children, here are a few child friendly kitchen flooring options you can choose from:

Linoleum flooring: This flooring option is good because the floors are made from natural product. It is durable and easy to clean. It has antibacterial qualities and it is good for kids (or any one) with allergies.

Cork flooring: Majorly, the floor type we consider here are made from natural materials. Cork flooring is non-toxic and comes as interlocking planks and can be installed by just about anybody. This type of flooring is highly recommended for your kitchen and especially for those who have kids.

Bamboo flooring: This type of flooring is durable, eco-friendly, cost-effective, pet friendly as well as child friendly and fire-resistant. With all these qualities, it is sure to protect your kid and last longer.

Whether you are renovating or building a new office space, one important thing to be considered is the type of flooring to be adopted. A top quality office flooring will serve as a good first impression for your clients as well as create a comfortable working environment for your employees.

There are a lot of factors that determine which flooring option to choose. For example, if the office is expected to have high traffic of people, it is advisable to choose floors that are made of hard surfaces and can withstand wear and tear. Also consider the ease of repair and maintenance of the floors as well as cost of each type of floor.

Here are a few flooring options that are ideal for office spaces:

Laminate floors: This type of floor is very easy to install, less costly compared to wood flooring and doesn’t scratch easily. If a thick underlayment is added, it will cushion the laminate floor well. It is also durable, easy to clean and maintain.

Tiles or ceramic: Tiles do not wear out easily. They last longer and are stain-resistant. Tiles also improve the beauty of an office as long as it is cleaned regularly. Although tiles beautifies an office, if not laid evenly and properly, it can easily get cracked.

Solid wood flooring: This type of floors elevates the look and feel of the interior design of an office, lasts longer and can easily be refinished if it starts to wear or if it has scratches.

Rubber Flooring: This type of flooring is good for high-traffic offices such as airports, restaurants, healthcare facilities, etc. It is durable, resistant to water and heat, easy to maintain, comfortable to walk on and absorbs sound.

Hence, it is important to consider all factors before deciding on the flooring you want to use for your office space. In that way, your flooring will then be able to last for as long as they can.

Previously we have discussed what laminate flooring is all about. Laminate flooring is made from synthetic fiber materials.

Apart from the homes, laminate flooring can also be used in commercial places. Laminate flooring is highly favored in commercial places because it requires little maintenance. A commercial-grade laminate flooring is manufactured to withstand high traffic that is seen in a commercial setting.

When purchasing laminate flooring for commercial uses, you need to consider their ratings so you do not use the one meant for low-traffic (residential) areas in a commercial (high-traffic) setting.

The rating for commercial laminate flooring should be anything between AC3, AC4 or AC5 not AC1 or AC2 (which is mostly for residential areas). This rating is based on a scale from AC1 to AC5 based on their ability to resist stains, scratches, abrasions etc.

Maintaining laminate flooring in commercial places is quite easy. With a superior quality flooring, wear and tear layer, dirt, dust and stains can be easily removed. There are no worries about laminate flooring in commercial places even if the place is exposed to sunlight.

Because of the synthetic finish of laminate flooring, the use of it in a commercial place is sure to attract customers. It brings out the class desired out of a commercial setting. Since it can be cleaned easily compared to hard wood flooring, it is more often used in commercial places. It takes less skill to install, and maintain. It is equally cost-effective. The use of laminate flooring stems from the fact that is manufactured to be easily installed by non-skilled person, i.e., you can even do it yourself.

The flooring for your kitchen is important as much as the food that comes out from it.

If you are looking for the kind of flooring that will bring out the class in your kitchen, plus the kind of flooring that is relatively easy to install and maintain, you might consider laminate flooring over the traditional type of flooring such as hardwood or solid wood flooring.

This type of flooring (laminate flooring) has been proven to be durable, less costly and requires less skill to install. They are also resistant to moisture, stains and fading.

Installing laminate floors are easy as one can do it on one’s own. You can also use the services of a professional flooring contractor as it is less expensive to install this type of floor. This type of floors come as planks packaged so they can easily lap on to one another. Sometimes, glue can be used to make sure they stick together well. If you plan on doing it yourself, make sure to give room for contraction and expansion by providing an underlay.

It is pretty easy to maintain a laminate flooring. Make sure to always remove dust and sand particles to avoid scratches especially in high-traffic areas. Also try as much as possible to avoid moisture or water on it as it can cause the plank to swell, though some types of laminate flooring have water-resistant coatings. Put adhesive pads under your furniture to avoid scratching the floor. If you happen to get a low quality laminate floor, over time, it will gradually start to separate, thereby creating gaps between the planks. These gaps will soon become filled with dirt. To avoid this, it is advisable to get a superior quality laminate flooring even if it costs more. It is also not advisable to get floor cleaners that are specifically meant for laminate flooring, so that your flooring will last a long time if it is maintained well.

Solid wood flooring, also known as hardwood flooring is the traditional type of flooring. This type of flooring is made using natural and durable woods. The types of wood used for this kind of flooring include maple, oak etc. This type of flooring will last longer when it is very well maintained.

On the other hand, laminate flooring is a multi-layer synthetic flooring whose inner core layer is made of fiber board and melamine resin materials. This type of flooring imitates the way wood looks and usually with a laminate finish. This type of flooring is also less expensive compared to solid wood flooring, however does not last as solid wood flooring.

Since it is confusing to sometimes decide on which kind of flooring to go for, here are a few points to consider before making your final decision:

Cost: Hardwood flooring is usually costly and this depends on how hard the wood is. The cost of installing solid wood flooring is also higher compared to laminate flooring.

Durability: Laminate flooring resists scratches, wear and tear and moisture better than solid wood flooring since it is laminated. Hardwood flooring is difficult to clean but more appealing compared to laminate flooring.

Installation: Hardwood flooring is difficult to install unlike laminate flooring. Laminate flooring is packed as planks in a way so that they can easily lap into one another. If you make mistake with the installation of solid wood flooring, it could be costly and frustrating.

Maintenance: In laminate flooring, there is no frequent repairs since it doesn’t wear and tear easily as it resistant to scratches as well. On the other hand, solid wood flooring can be easily repaired by refinishing and sanding out imperfections.

Environmental considerations: If sunlight enters your house, do not consider using solid wood flooring since it can fade away easily as it is a natural product. For health and environmental reasons, consider the melamine resin in laminate flooring as it may be a source of concern.
