Vinyl flooring has been in the flooring market for many decades. With the advancement of flooring technology, the quality of vinyl flooring has increased ever since. Today, there is even vinyl flooring products with eco-accreditations such as the Singapore Green Label.

Homeowners sometimes got confused by the range of vinyl flooring products, hence let’s delve into the topic on the types of vinyl flooring available for home owners in Singapore today.

Clickable Resilient Flooring

Resilient flooring is part of the family of vinyl flooring. However, it is very different to traditional vinyl flooring due to features like 5mm thickness, 0.5 mm wear layer, made from pure virgin vinyl pulp and you do not need a flat subfloor to install the resilient flooring. Many flooring contractors sometimes will confuse the consumer by telling consumers that their resilient flooring is high end, premium and luxury. Basically, these flooring are considered as clickable resilient flooring which is categorised under the big family of vinyl flooring.

Vinyl Sheet, Plank or Tiles (or Traditional Vinyl Flooring)

These types of vinyl flooring are usually installed in clean room, clinics, hospitals and science labs. This is because medical vinyl sheets and tiles have anti-static and anti-bacterial properties which make it suitable for the above-mentioned areas. One thing to know that vinyl sheet and tiles usually has low thickness and wear layer compared to clickable resilient flooring, that is why, it is not recommended for homes.

Medical Clickable Resilient Flooring

From the terms, you will be able to guess this type of flooring has both features of a clickable resilient flooring and also medical vinyl sheet or tiles. Usually, they are in plank types and is highly recommended for homes with kids and elderly due to its eco friendly, anti-bacterial and durable features.

Eco Resilient Flooring (ERF)

This type of vinyl flooring has similar features to clickable resilient flooring, only that its focus is more on being certified eco friendly and eco healthy. Typical features of eco resilient flooring that makes it different to traditional clickable resilient flooring are its safe composite of material used to manufacture the flooring, better contribution to indoor air quality and also certified eco friendly. Other than that, it has all the features of clickable resilient flooring (whether it is name premium resilient, high end resilient, luxury resilient and so on), such as high slip resistant, waterproof, high impact resistant, high stain resistant, better dimensional stability, termite proof and more.

Now, you have a better understanding of vinyl flooring and the current types of vinyl flooring options available today for our home owners. Hence, do make wise decision when shopping for flooring. Do not be misled by marketing terms of clickable resilient flooring such as high end resilient, luxury resilient, premium resilient and more!

Carpet, an option for flooring, started back long time back. It could have started as early as in the 1800s. Today, we see it often in workplaces like offices and clinics. Eco Resilient Flooring (ERF), on the other hand, is a trend that came up recently. It is also used in offices, especially the lobby area, and some clinics. Because of the similarity, there are many debates over carpet and resilient flooring. Which is better option of the two? This article will help you to understand the difference between the two types of flooring.

Maintenance

What if I were to spill a cup of ribena onto your beloved carpet? You will definitely scream at me, yeah? Reason being that it is hard to clean spillage on the carpet. It may seep through and stain the carpet. Once stained, the carpet is very hard to clean. Due to the material of carpets, moisture can also be absorbed much easier on carpet. With moisture, mould can grow on the carpet. It will result in obvious sightings and make the carpet unsightly. It is highly recommended for a change of carpet every 5 to 10 years for hygiene reason. You won’t feel comfortable stepping on a carpet that is mouldy and dirty right?

Eco Resilient Flooring (ERF), on the other hand, has no such issue of mould and stain as it is stain resistant. Resilient flooring has no worries over moisture as it is waterproof. Hence, there is no worries about water spillage or water seeping into the flooring, resulting in undesirable consequences.

Installation

Carpet and Eco Resilient Flooring (ERF) are considered relatively to install. Carpet may take up more labour compared to resilient flooring as the flooring is mostly stapled and glued while resilient flooring is using a patented click system. In terms of safety, resilient flooring is safer as you do not need to worry about the exposed staple.

Replacement

Replacement of both flooring are similar. You are required to change only that particular “tile” that is faulty. There is no need to replace the whole flooring. However, you will need to be careful of the rusty staples, if any, when replacing a carpet flooring.

Design

Carpets color, depending on how it is manufactured, may appear to have more shades of one color. It may also have more colored compared to resilient flooring. However, in terms of the pattern, you will realise there is limitations. This is due to how carpets are manufactured.

Eco Resilient Flooring (ERF) may not appear to have as many shades of colors as carpets. Due to the manufacturing process and technology intervention, you realise you are lost for choices when it comes to pattern. You will be able to get designs as close as real stone or wood, something that carpet cannot provide.

Whether it is carpet or eco resilient flooring, both are able to provide you the different feel you are looking for in your residential or commercial properties.

Renting or buying a commercial property or space in Singapore? Depending on the type of commercial space you are considering, vinyl flooring will benefit you, your customers and also your co-workers.

Retail Space

Retail space require a type of flooring which has high impact resistance, high slip resistant and something that is cost efficient. Two types of vinyl flooring to consider for your retail spaces are clickable resilient flooring and also eco resilient flooring.

Office Space

Consider spending a little bit more on vinyl flooring, as it is easy to clean and wash due to its waterproof feature. Think in long term, you actually save more with vinyl flooring than with carpet.

Clinics, Hospital and Labs

For these commercial properties, you have to look for a flooring which is both anti-static and anti-bacterial. Two types of vinyl flooring to consider are Medical vinyl flooring and medical clickable resilient flooring.

Gym

Imagine the sweat stench on the gym’s carpet if it is left un-maintained for a long period of time. As good quality vinyl flooring is highly waterproof and easy to clean. You can quickly wash away the sweat stench!

Schools and Institution

Classrooms today are usually in enclosed air-conditioned areas. Hence, one vinyl flooring to consider is eco resilient flooring due to its eco health and eco friendly features.

So, there you have the different type of vinyl flooring use for different types of commercial spaces and properties.

Kitchen is one of the important area in our house. This is where all the good food are made. Maintaining its cleanliness is, therefore, relatively important. Yet, we all know how troublesome it is to clean the kitchen when there is a lot of oil splattering due to heavy cooking. Beside oil splatter, we would also need to consider the slippery floor in the kitchen. What are, then, some of the characteristic of a good flooring for kitchen then?

Ease to install

You just got the key to your new house and cannot wait to move in. Yet, renovation has to complete. The flooring is one of the reasons for the long wait time for the renovation to be completed. Hence, having an ease to install flooring will help you to move into your love nest at the soonest possible.

Highly Slip Resistant

Watery and slippery floor is, sometimes, inevitable in a kitchen. We tend to wash the kitchen, wash the utensils, and we may leave traces of water behind. Hence, kitchen is known to be one of the most dangerous place in your home, beside the bathroom. Having a slip resistant flooring will make your kitchen safer for all of your family member, be it young or old, alike.

Ease to Maintain

Kitchen, a place where oil stained are easily found, especially if you do not clean the area after cooking. It is a high maintenance area in the house. Therefore, for any family, to have an easy to maintain flooring will help. Lesser time spent on cleaning also equates to more time spent enjoying the good food you just created in the kitchen with your family.

Highly waterproof

Everyone would want to have a flooring that last. Having a highly waterproof flooring will ensure that your flooring is in good condition as no water can slip through to the base. Having this in mind, it also means there is no chance of having mouldy floor. This is critical to areas like the kitchen, as that is where food of all types are handled.

After listing down the characteristics and the reasons, we highly recommended Eco Resilient Flooring (ERF) as the recommended kitchen flooring. Besides the listed reasons, Eco Resilient Flooring is also Eco Friendly. Eco Resilient Flooring is one of the fewest clickable resilient flooring products that has been awarded The Singapore Green Label. Hence, Who would not want such flooring with so much benefits?

Manufactured in South Korea by NOX Corporation, Eco Protect Resilient Flooring is one of the very few luxury vinyl flooring products today, that has high quality when it comes to safety and health standard. Distributed by The Floor Gallery in Singapore, Eco Protect Resilient Flooring is one of the most recommended flooring options today, especially for households with elderly, young children and pets.

Here are the reasons why.

Antibacterial Properties

Grand Oak White Design

For health conscious homeowners, this is the first thing to look at. Its antibacterial properties made it recommended for clinics, childcare centres and hospitals too. Have your children ever drop morsels of food on the floor, pick it up and then eat them? Or have you ever sleeps on the floor? Do you know that there are millions of germs and bacteria on the flooring if it is not cleaned and maintained thoroughly? The anti-bacterial layer on the Eco Protect Resilient Flooring creates a protection layer that kills germs and bacteria. Therefore, it is recommended for families especially when they have family members with skin sensitivities and allergies.

Heat Resistance

Eco Protect Resilient Flooring is best recommended for kitchen due to its heat resistant properties too.

Unlike ceramic tiles, Eco Protect Resilient Flooring has better heat resistance and hence creates a comfy effect on the feet. When the weather outside is cool, you will not be afraid of getting cold feet that may lead to rheumatism especially for the elderly. When the outside weather is warm, your feet will feel comfortable as well!

Impact Resistance

Eco Protect Resilient Flooring has a built-in softer layer on top of its core, which helps to lessen the impact when a person falls. Hence, it is highly recommended for families with elderly and children.

Slip Resistance

European Oak Golden Design

Such flooring is recommended for the home kitchen and here are the reasons why!

#1 Waterproof

Grey Trend Design

One key feature of ERF flooring is that it is waterproof. Hence, this flooring can be washed and mopped ample times without worrying about water seeping between the gaps of the flooring. Its waterproof feature makes it a strong substitute to laminate flooring which is not resistant enough towards water. Therefore, eco resilient flooring is highly recommended for the kitchen!

#2 Certified Eco Friendly

Euro Oak Design

Another key feature of eco resilient flooring (ERF) is certified eco friendly friendly. Its eco friendly certification is mainly based on two areas; the material of the flooring and the indoor air quality in enclosed areas when the flooring is being installed.

#3 Slip Resistant

ERF tiles – Anthracite Design

Eco resilient flooring (ERF), which was introduced in the Singapore flooring market in 2014, is an improvement and strong substitute to existing clickable resilient flooring products due to its durability as well as certified eco friendly properties. Over the years, Eco resilient flooring (ERF) has benefited residential homes and commercial properties owners in many ways. Below are the 8 benefits of Eco Resilient Flooring (ERF).

Certified Eco Friendly Resilient Flooring

As eco resilient flooring is certified eco friendly, it is therefore a highly recommended flooring product for home owners today. (ERF – White Sawn Design)

Eco resilient flooring (ERF), is certified eco friendly. It has the Singapore Green Label certification which requires stringent standards to achieve it. Two of the standard are healthy indoor air quality and also the material composite of the product. Some resilient flooring products in Singapore may not be certified eco friendly mainly because of their material composite. Many of these resilient flooring products may have seemingly ‘eco friendly certifications’, however if the home owner can take a closer look, the resilient flooring products suppliers who got their ‘eco friendly certifications’ are not because of the material composite of the products but because the manufacturing process of the products was done in an environmentally fashion.

2. Waterproof

Eco resilient flooring is good for kitchen because of its waterproof and easy-to-wash properties. (ERF – Cool Cement Design)

Eco resilient flooring (ERF) is also a waterproof flooring hence making it highly recommended for areas such as the kitchen, entrances near the bathrooms or the sanitary area.
5. Scratch Resistant

Eco Resilient Flooring is a pet friendly flooring due to its scratch resistant and eco friendly feature.

Eco resilient flooring (ERF) has a highly scratch resistant 0.5 mm wear layer and a coating (turf shield) which enhances the lifespan of the flooring through wear and tear. Its high scratch resistance make it recommended for family with pets (‘Purrfect!’) or even high traffic commercial areas such as retail shops and restaurants.

6. Stain Resistant

Oil Stains? Don’t worry about it as Eco resilient flooring (ERF) is stain resistant!

Too much cooking? Afraid the oil stains may be hard to wash thus making your eco resilient flooring sticky? Have no worries about that as Eco Resilient Flooring (ERF) is stain resistant. The oil stains can be easily removed. Furthermore, ERF is waterproof such that all you need is to just wash it with soap and water, the flooring will be spick and span in no time!

7. Termite Proof

Eco Resilient Flooring – Thai Teak Design

Eco resilient flooring (ERF) is termite proof. This is because its material is not edible or does not look ‘delicious’ to the termites. Hence, such flooring is also recommended for landed homes in areas near forestation with a relatively higher level of humidity, or ground level commercial properties.

8. Lifetime Warranty (Residential)

Eco Resilient Flooring (ERF) ~ Oak Floss Design

With the above 7 properties in place, manufacturers of eco resilient flooring (ERF) are therefore able to place a lifetime warranty on its products so long the flooring is installed correctly by experienced flooring installers. This lifetime warranty will therefore give home owners a ‘peace of mind’.

It is important for us, as parents, to have a flooring suitable for our kids. They are, after all, our precious little ones. Having a flooring that is suitable for the kids can help us save not only money in the long run, but also save a lot of hassles.

Babies seem to be so fragile. Everything about them are so breakable and they are developing. Their lungs, their brain, their kidney, their everything. The last thing we would want to have in our mind, as a parent, is to have moldy floorings for our babies to crawl on, or have their fragile body landed on any dusty flooring. Having an eco-friendly flooring not only encourage the growth of a green kid in the future, but also reduces the different emission of chemicals, dust and mites, hence reducing the growth of molds on the floor. We can then safely allow our baby to crawl anywhere and everywhere on the floor.

Keeping the floor clean, will be another issue. Having a baby or toddler has already taken up a lot of our attention and energy. We definitely would not want to think how to clean certain mess up, especially it is inevitable for them to have spillage in their growing years. The spillage can go from milk to ribena to syrup drinks to anything one can think of. As we know, some flooring requires almost immediate cleaning before staining occurs. An easy to maintain flooring would be the best ultimate choice when we have a baby or toddler around. We do not need to waste our time waxing and polishing the floor to make it shine. We can then spend more time with our precious little one and enjoy their growth.

When toddlers started their walking journey out from their baby crib, it is inevitable that they will slip and fall. It could be due to their toys on the floor, or due to the fact that balancing is something relatively new to them. Our main concern, as a parent, will focus mainly on their safety. Every fall they made, especially on hard flooring, will make us go “OUCH!”. It hurts us to see them fall, yet it is part and parcel of life. Therefore, to have a flooring that is able to cushion their fall will make the place a little safer for them to set foot on their walking journey.

It helps too when the flooring is slip resistant. Slip resistant flooring is important to all, regardless of age. It definitely provide us the comfort of knowing everyone is safe walking around. No puddle of water can keep any children or anyone for that matter to stop walking when there is a slip resistant flooring!

After so much on the reasons why a good flooring is important when you have a toddler, what will we recommend as the recommended flooring for households with children of any age? Needless to say, it will be the eco-resilient flooring (ERF)! Besides being a child friendly flooring that we recommend, eco-resilient flooring has many different colors and design to choose from, matching them to the color or theme of your house.

In recent years, it is often a problem that resilient flooring and vinyl flooring may not have a compatible skirting option to tag along. In such a way, that these flooring products are usually installed with wood skirting or pvc skirting in which they are not compatible in many ways. With the advance of technology, Eco Resilient Skirting (ERS), is recently introduced into the flooring and skirting market. Making this type of skirting option, highly recommended for resilient flooring and vinyl flooring use. Here are the reasons why.

#1 Fully Waterproof

Finally, there is a skirting product that outweighs the water resistant capibilities for traditional wood skirting and pvc skirting. Firstly, eco resilient skirting (ERS) is waterproof in its material, making it relatively better than wood skirting. Secondly, eco resilient flooring is fully covered and engineered with its ‘clean-joint installation’ to prevent water droplets and moisture from entering the gap between the skirting and the flooring. Therefore, making it a good substitute to traditional pvc skirting.

#2 Best for Enclosed Areas

Eco resilient skirting (ERS) is the first type of skirting that reach the stringent European REACH guidelines as well as being awarded Greenguard Gold certification. What it means to the home owners is that, better air quality is ensured especially in the enclosed areas; thus ensuring a better and safer environment.

#3 Termite Proof

Eco resilient skirting (ERS) is completely termite proof, therefore home owners who installed it with resilient flooring and vinyl flooring in landed or ground floor units, will not have to worry about potential termite attacks.

#4 Easy to Clean

Eco resilient skirting’s easy to maintain and easy to clean feature, in one way or another, makes your life easier.

#5 Long Lasting

With its strong durability and highly resistant feature, eco resilient skirting (ERS) is hence a long lasting skirting product. Therefore for resilient flooring products which give lifetime warranty to residential projects, installing ERS will be a better choice for a long lasting home!

In short, the advent of eco resilient skirting (ERS) makes the home owners and contractor look further into better ways into making the home a safer, healthier and more durable place!

One might think that vinyl flooring and resilient flooring products are more or less the same since they both belong to the resilient flooring category. However, this is a misconception! There are a few big differences between conventional vinyl flooring and resilient flooring products, such as eco resilient flooring and high end resilient flooring.

As there is a wide number of vinyl flooring options in Singapore, we shall compare the general features of conventional vinyl flooring with those of eco resilient flooring.

#1 Installation Method

Conventional vinyl flooring generally relies on the glued down approach while Eco Resilient Flooring (ERF) utilises the click on approach. This installation method makes it similar to advanced vinyl products such as luxury vinyl tiles (LVT) and high end resilient flooring.

#2 Thickness

Eco resilient flooring can be slightly thicker than conventional vinyl flooring though it may be hard to see with the naked eye. Eco resilient flooring (ERF) usually has a minimum 5mm thickness and a 0.5 mm wear layer, which is thicker than that of standard vinyl flooring. This gentle cushion makes Eco Resilient Flooring more comfortable for walking on barefoot.

Want to find out more about our eco-friendly resilient flooring options? Feel free to get in touch with our flooring team HERE.

#3 Water Resistant Properties

As compared to standard vinyl flooring, eco resilient flooring and other quality clickable resilient flooring have relatively stronger water resistant properties. This is mainly due to the fact that glue is not required for resilient flooring installation.

#4 Malleability

Often, the installation of standard vinyl flooring requires the sub floor to be flat so that there will not be gaps or ‘air space’ in between the floor boards (or tiles and sheet) and the sub floor. However, for quality clickable resilient flooring, a completely flat ground is not necessary to lay the flooring, as it will naturally follow the contours of the sub floor.

#5 Commercial Usage

In terms of properties where heavy duty traffic takes place, such as offices and industrial factories, vinyl flooring will be preferable to high end resilient flooring products.

#6 Eco Friendly Flooring Certification

Another clear difference between eco resilient flooring and standard vinyl flooring in general is that eco resilient flooring (ERF) is certified with recognised eco accreditations from Green Label Singapore and FloorScore®.

There you go – the differences between standard vinyl flooring and resilient flooring in terms of their installation methods, benefits, and usages.
