Wood Flooring Styles

Wood flooring is one of the closest materials you can get from Nature. The rustic feel, musky smell, and the unique grain of each piece of plank brings about a nostalgic feel to the living space. Wood flooring styles naturally exudes a touch of timeless elegance and it is no wonder that it remains the choice of many home owners. It is almost always found in buildings of characters, such as palaces and manors that date back to historical times. For example, the State Hermitage in St. Petersburg, Russia that has arguably the most beautiful wood floors.

Contrary to common beliefs, wood can be a great eco-friendly choice for all living and company working spaces too. By using wood sourced from sustainable forests (FSC / PEFC certified) and using only adhesives that emit little or no volatile organic compounds (VOCs), wood flooring can be an eco-friendly choice.

For your next design project or home renovation idea, come take a look at some of the beautiful wood flooring style projects that The Floor Gallery has been a part of…

Project #1: HDB Flooring

The owners of this unit chose American Walnut to dress up the floor of their living room. The warm-tone wood flooring style complements the unit well as it provides contrast to the white walls of the premises. The natural varying tones of the wood’s light shade breaks the uniformity of the flooring, brings out the character of the family home, and gives a warm cosy feel to the home. In addition to its aesthetics, this solid wood flooring’s eco-friendly and non-toxic features made it a great flooring choice for the whole family, including the little corner of their furry companion.

Project #2: Condominium Flooring

This apartment in Cote D’zaur Condominium in Marine Parade is covered by FloorTop wood flooring. Also known as engineered wood flooring, it is made by compressing multiple layers of 100% real textured hardwood. With its unique construction, this wood flooring style is more durable, dimensionally stable and less susceptible to warping. In this home, FloorTop engineered wood, along with its natural wood grains, blends perfectly with the Scandinavian-like white walls of the apartment.

Installation of FloorTop engineered wood flooring is also faster and easier. Unlike traditional wood flooring, the original floor does not have to be hacked. FloorTop wood flooring can be overlaid onto the existing floor. There is also no need to sand and varnish on site as the floors are pre-finished at the factory. This cuts down the installation time from weeks to just a day or two!

———————————————————————————————————————————
Interested to find out more about FloorTop wood flooring for your property? Feel free to contact our decking specialists HERE!
———————————————————————————————————————————

Project #3: Editlounge Pte Ltd’s Outdoor Decking

Generally all wood can be used for outdoors. The wood used will have to be kept dry and regularly maintained to prevent wood rot. However, there are some wood species that have a higher resistance to decay than others and these are the wood species that are commonly used for outdoor decking. One of the wood species would be Chengal. It is study, durable and naturally resistant to termites. In addition, Chengal has a relatively low shrinkage ratio, (only inferior to Teak) which makes it excellent for applications where it undergoes periodic changes in moisture.

Editlounge Pte Ltd, a post-production and media management company, installed chengal wood decking at the balcony of its Cendex Centre office. Instead of laying a deck over the entire balcony, the chengal wood decking was interspersed with some grey pebbles and tiles. This breaks the monotony of the decked space and gives it a calming “Zen” feel. This project shows that one can definitely create stylish wonders in an outdoor space. All it takes is a little creativity!

Types of Wood Flooring

At The Floor Gallery, we have a wide range of wood flooring styles to suit your needs. For traditional solid wood flooring design, consider Canadian Cherry, a red-colored hardwood hailing from Canada and the United States. Alternatively, take a look at European Birch, a lovely brown hardwood popular among Singaporean homeowners. If you love something a little darker, Tasmania Oak is a grey-colored wood that blends well with contemporary, white interiors. We have more than 20 types of hardwood to choose from, check them out here.

Flooring accounts for a large part of the design and renovation of a property. Unless one opts for cement screed for that industrial look, chances are that one will need to spend a substantial of the renovation budget on flooring. Although buyers are spoilt for choice today when it comes to flooring options, it might be worth considering using eco flooring material.

When considering the environmental impact of flooring, it is more than just choosing material that comes from natural and safe sources. One also has to take into account the way the material is harvested and processed, as well as how the separate pieces are put together to form a complete whole. What happens after the flooring comes to the end of its useful life is worth considering, too.

Let us have a look at the various green flooring options available in the market.

Vinyl Flooring

Credit: Carpet Review

Vinyl flooring has grown in popularity in recent years. Buyers are attracted to the product’s durability, safety, wide array of designs and colours. However, what is not commonly known is that many vinyl flooring products contain a class of chemicals called phthalates. Phthalates are hazardous to children and can cause serious damage to their livers, kidneys, lungs and reproductive systems.

If one does opt to use vinyl flooring, choose vinyl tiles and planks from manufacturers that commit to phthalate-free and sustainable processes. Where possible, also choose vinyl products that contain low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). High exposure to VOCs can cause adverse effects, like respiratory track irritation, dizziness and nausea.

The Floor Gallery’s non-toxic and low VOC flooring range – Eco Protect Resilient Flooring (EPRF) – offers protection from such harmful chemicals.

Wood Flooring

Wood has been used for centuries and is a common choice for people who want a timeless, classic look in their premises. While wood is certainly a green flooring option and does not emit much VOCs during its processing, bear in mind that forests are depleting in many parts of the world. Choose hardwood that comes from sustainable and responsibility managed sources At the end of their useful lives, wood can be burnt to generate energy, rather than being dumped in landfills.

One important thing to note: When installing solid timber flooring, get the vendor to use adhesives that emit little or no VOCs. Get acquainted with The Floor Gallery’s all natural and environmentally friendly range of Solid Wood Flooring.

Stone Flooring

Stone is another common material used in flooring. Common choices are marble, granite and slate. Its extreme durability makes it an environmentally friendly flooring choice. One advantage of using stone: When it has outlived its usefulness, it does not go to waste. Stone tiles can be crushed and repurposed into aggregate material for use in stone tiles or as the foundation of roads.

The Eco Flooring Choice is Yours!

As you can see, whether it is for decorating home or furnishing corporate offices, buyers today are spoilt for sustainable flooring choices when planning for their renovation. Vinyl offers a contemporary and refreshing look, while wood exudes that timeless, classic feel.

At The Floor Gallery, we offer one of Singapore’s widest range of products for your flooring needs. Not only do we care about the aesthetics of your home or office, we are also fully committed to your health and environmental sustainability.

To find a flooring option that fits your budget and lifestyle options, do not hesitate to contact our friendly consultants for flooring advice HERE!

Solid wood flooring is real solid timber planks for the indoor residential space. Though sometimes may get mixed up between solid wood flooring and parquet flooring. Well, the difference is that solid wood flooring is in the form of full planks or double or triple strips sizes. While parquet is in the form of tiny jigsaw mosaic wood blocks forming together.

Dimensional Stability

Based on the surface area and weight of a solid wood flooring plank to a parquet block, it explains clearly that a solid wood flooring plank has relatively higher dimensional stability towards a typical parquet block. Therefore it means that the allowance of a solid wood flooring plank when it comes to expand and contract due to temperature changes will be much less than that of a parquet flooring. This explains why home owners may sometimes see tiny gaps in between their blocks of parquet. Though solid wood flooring is relatively more expensive than parquet, it is a better choice in terms of durability and long lasting.

Better Indoor Air Quality

Wood flooring are naturally friendly for enclosed areas as it wood does not accumulate dust mites. Some environmentally concerned home owners as well as wood lovers may consider using recycled or engineered wood flooring produced by responsible flooring manufacturers. Hence, home owners can lead a better healthy living with good indoor air quality while at the same time, do their little part for the sustainable environment.

Comfort To The Feet

Wood flooring is a natural insulator of heat. When the surrounding weather is cold, you would feel a tinge of warmth at your feet when you stepped on a real solid wood flooring. And vice versa when the temperature becomes hotter, as in commonly seen in tropical countries like Singapore, you would feel the flooring to be as cool as a breeze in the air. Hence, solid wood flooring is something that adds a little sense of comfort to your feet.

Enhance Property Value

Wood flooring may potentially increase the value of your property. As compare to conventional flooring products like high end vinyl resilient flooring, installing wood flooring enhances the value of your property more as wood itself is something of value.

A Statement of Luxury

Real solid wood flooring can be highly priced as timber flooring has to be taken from a responsible manufacturer or resource. Other than that, each piece of timber flooring planks and flooring strips are as unique in terms of wood patterns, grooves and designs. Therefore, it gives a strong posh identity for the wood flooring owner.

By understanding the benefits of solid wood flooring and the difference between them and parquet flooring, home owners can therefore be confident in getting the best quality wood flooring for their luxurious abode!
